When you need a structural engineer
- Removing or altering a load-bearing wall. Any wall carrying weight from above needs an engineered beam calculation before LADBS will approve the opening.
- Adding a second story. The existing foundation and framing need to be verified — or upgraded — to carry the new load.
- Building on a hillside lot. Slope stability, retaining walls, and foundation design on graded or sloped sites require both geotechnical and structural engineering.
- Seismic retrofit work. Bolting the structure to its foundation and bracing cripple walls follows engineered specifications, not general contractor judgment alone.
- Large openings — sliding doors, big windows. Wide openings in an exterior wall usually need an engineered header and, on some homes, additional shear wall elsewhere to compensate.
- Pools or additions near an existing foundation. Excavation close to an existing structure can affect its footing and needs engineering review.
- Any project on a lot with known soil issues. Expansive soil, fill, or a history of settlement calls for engineering input before design finalizes.
What you probably don't need one for
Cosmetic remodels, kitchen and bathroom updates that don't touch structure, non-structural interior partition changes, and most single-story additions on a straightforward flat lot typically move through plan check without a dedicated structural engineer — though your architect or contractor will flag it if something changes that.
What a structural engineer actually delivers
A licensed structural engineer produces calculations and a set of stamped structural drawings — beam sizes, connections, foundation details, shear wall locations — that get submitted as part of your permit package. LADBS plan check reviews these against code before issuing a permit. Without the stamped drawings, structural elements of your project simply will not clear plan check.

Bringing the structural engineer in late — after the architectural design is finalized — is the most common cause of redesign. Structure should be considered from the first floor plan sketch, not added afterward.

Can my contractor act as the structural engineer?
No. Structural engineering requires a separate, licensed professional (a PE or SE) whose stamp is required for LADBS to approve structural work. A general contractor executes the plans but does not produce or stamp them.
Does every addition need a structural engineer?
